Yamaha Tech 3's Johann Zarco was both the top Independent Team rider and top rookie on Day 1 at a rain-affected Aragon GP, going third fastest on the combined timesheets behind only Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo.

"Pretty happy about the first day." Commented the Frenchman "I have to learn the track on a MotoGP bike for the first time and in the wet conditions I can take more time, so I don’t need to stress too much, like when you have to push in the dry from the first lap, which can be quite difficult and make you tired on Sunday."

"So I am happy that it was wet and he feeling for me was quite good – for Misano I didn’t have good confidence in the wet, especially because of the track, but here the track feels good and I could improve lap after lap and manage well."

"Even this afternoon, I lost some positions but then I kept calm, waited a little bit and pushed for the last lap and it was quite good. Now I am ready for Aragon, so I’m waiting for tomorrow!" Surmised Zarco

Mattia Pasini stepped up to take the top spot in the closing practice session of the day, from championship leader Franco Mobidelli and Takaaki Nakagami. In this morning's session Nakagami finished the session in 27th, but the on-off conditions hampered most of the riders.

Midway through FP2, Lorenzo Baldassari suffered a crash but thankfully escaped unscathed. In the last minute of the session, Jorge Navarro took a trip into the gravel and he too was okay. Miguel Oliveira sat comfortably in fourth for the majority of the session, but was knocked back to fifth over the checkered flag by Simone Corsi who had put in a last ditch attempt to get himself into the top five. As it looked as if it would stay that way, Sandro Cortese bumped himself up to fourth, leaving Corsi in fifth and Oliveira in sixth.

Alex Marquez is making his return from injury and his weekend in Aragon isn't quite going his way so far. This morning in FP1 he managed 14th, but FP2 saw him finish the session in 29th. Marcel Schrotter is also making his injury return, and after a more than respectable 4th this morning, he ended FP2 in 11th.

Ducati rider Jorge Lorenzo was one man who showed good pace in both the fully wet FP1 and drying FP2, taking P6 in the morning and then going second with a late strike in the afternoon.

But weather looks set to change on Saturday, meaning the winner at Aragon in 2014 and 2015 will reserve judgement after some more - hopefully dry - track time.

"Well it has been quite positive considering the conditions were not perfect – it was quite wet, but not completely dry." Said the Majorcan

"We didn’t manage to get a conclusion about our performance because tomorrow looks as if it will be dry, but we’ve been quite competitive: sixth in the morning, second in the afternoon, so it was okay." He concluded

Dani Pedrosa took to the top in FP2 from Jorge Lorenzo and Johann Zarco.

Once again, the rain started falling at the beginning of the session and initially the only rider on track was Karel Abraham. It took a while, but eventually all riders came out to set fast laps.

Dani Pedrosa worked his way up to become the only rider in the 1:59s, while his team mate Marc Marquez slipped back to fourth.

Pedrosa's fast lap also benefitted Abraham who had gained a tow behind the Spaniard in the closing minutes of FP2. Abraham was able to get into Dani's slip stream to jump up to fifth.

Sam Lowes is having a good weekend in Aragon so far. He's experienced success at MotorLand in the past with a win in Moto2, and this morning he managed a 12th place in FP1.

He ended FP2 in seventh, improving his time from this morning by just under three seconds.

Both Aleix and Pol Espargaro had an improved session this afternoon too. They finished FP1 in 15th and 17th respectively, but both managed to jump up to 9th and 10th in FP2 and improve their times dramatically.

Valentino Rossi won't be learning too much if these wet sessions continue, but he went out anyway and even sat within the top three - a huge feat considering his injury. He ended FP2 in 20th, just two seconds behind Pedrosa.
